Wurm/München
1952.193
PROVENANCE: Unknown
REFERENCE:

“His peasants and Cossacks…and rural weddings are of picturesque perfection and full of sparkling life.” (Spemanns, 1698) Wierusz-Kowalski painted the theme of two horse carriages racing along a wooded path in multiple variations. Two renditions, Racing the Horses and Going to the Wedding, are in the holdings of the Frye Art Museum. The group of compositions around Racing the Horses can be classified as genre paintings of Polish peasantry, which Wierusz-Kowalski began painting in the late 1860''s. During the 1880''s Wierusz-Kowalski''s compositions of peasant genre had reached its peak. Most variations of the composition can be dated between 1880 and 1900. (See Bühler, p. 161, Ritt zum Markt, ca. 1885; Vierspännig zum Markt, ca. 1890; Sonntagmorgen, ca. 1900)
In Racing the Horses, Wierusz-Kowalski particularly emphasizes the strength and energy of the white horses pulling the front wagon. Four festively dressed women occupy this carriage. As characteristic to the theme, a small spotted dog is playfully chasing along their side.

Wiebke M.
