The boat in the painting is spritsail rigged; this type of rig became popular during the mid 19th century, and generally replaced the traditional square sail. Towards the stern of the boat is a large boat/coffin shaped box. This is called a <span style="font-style:italic">fiskakiste </span>(fish coffin) or <span style="font-style:italic">fløytekiste</span> (floating coffin) and was used to transport live fish to market. The fiskakiste was towed behind the boat, the box had holes in it so that it filled with water, thus keeping the fish alive.
