Wierusz-Kowalski
inscribed on reverse [label]: Professor A.W. Kowalski, Hochzeitsfahrt, 62 x 49
1952.192
PROVENANCE: Unknown
REFERENCE:

Going to the Wedding is a particularly good example of Wierusz-Kowalski''s unique color palette. The usually dark palette is contrasted by a bright red scarf worn by one of the female peasants. The red scarf consistently occurs within Wierusz-Kowalski''s various renditions of the theme ''peasant women riding on wagons''. (See Bühler, p. 161, Ritt zum Markt, ca. 1885; Vierspännig zum Markt, ca. 1890; Sonntagmorgen, ca. 1900) In Going to the Wedding, the red patch of color is further highlighted by the bright turquoise of the open sky.
Wierusz-Kowalski''s brushstroke varies within one composition. While the white horses at the center of Going to the Wedding are clearly defined, the brushstroke becomes broader towards the outer rims of the composition. “The compartments of landscape give the impression - even the oil paintings - as if painted in water colors. The leaves, flowers or grass are painted with more depth of field and finally the figures are depicted as realistic as possible.” (Buehler, p. 42) While managing different brushstrokes in one composition, Wierusz-Kowalski achieves the impression of motion and depth.

Wiebke M.
