This painting was displayed as an underdrawing only, in the solo exhibition at the Frye in 2003; the artist was then commissioned by the Frye in 2004 to complete the painting in color, which he finished in 2007. The work is the final painting in a series of 5: The Five Capital Executions in China. The series is a combination of history painting, cultural critique and meditation on cruelty and compassion. The painting is in the style of a Thangka or scroll/banner painting used to guide a contemplative experience. The work is comprised of mixed media and screenprinting on canvas and ribbons.", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/2004.008_Low-Res.jpg", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/2004.008_Low-Res.jpg", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/2004.008_Low-Res.jpg", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/2004.008_Low-Res.jpg", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "9436", "Image_Type" : "", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] }, ] }
