Mary Ann Peters

(American, b. 1949) Mary Ann Peters is a Seattle-based artist whose work is informed by architecture, lost histories, science, personal heritage, politics, and questions of perception. Her art spans mediums that include paintings and drawings, installations, public art, and activism. Peters holds an MFA from the University of Washington, where her mentor was Michael Spafford. She is a founder of COCA (Center on Contemporary Art), Seattle and former board member and board president of NCFE (National Campaign for Freedom of Expression), the seminal group who defended artist rights and the First Amendment during the Helms era.

Peters’s work was shown at the Frye Art Museum as part of Genius / 21 Century / Seattle (September 26, 2015 – January 10, 2016), 36 Chambers (February 9 – May 5, 2013), and in Recent Acquisitions in Contemporary Art (Sept. 11, 2021 – Jan. 23, 2022).
